SUMMER: Taking Family Photographs at Cotswold Lavender

SUMMER: Taking Family Photographs at Cotswold Lavender
Despite having been to the Cotswolds many times throughout my life I had never heard of Cotswold Lavender before. It was only after I mentioned to a friend at work that I was heading to The Real Flower Confetti Co. Flower Field that they suggested visiting there too. Located just two miles away from the very popular Cotswold village of Broadway, Cotswold Lavender is the home to beautiful rolling lavender fields filled with many different varieties on offer to see. Not only are the so calming to walk around, but they are a photographers dream. The neat rows on rows of bright purple lavender make for a stunning photograph location for families, couples and children.

As someone who follows pretty much all of the seasonal blogger/photographer clichés throughout the year my mission this year was to find a lavender field. I didn't think there were any near where we lived or within reasonable travelling distance, so in previous years I've had to give the lavender shots a miss. However, now having discovered Cotswold Lavender no more years have to pass without the photos. I am certainly not a professional photographer, but the joy of lavender fields is that it is very easy to catch a beautiful photo whatever your skill level or camera quality. I used my DSLR with the kit lens to take these pictures, but also managed to get some lovely ones on my phone too. Luckily, at Cotswold Lavender they welcome visitors taking photos and there were many people with tripods and a variety of lens that I could only dream of!
Timing is everything when it comes to visiting lavender fields, so it is really worth following their social media on the run up to your planned visit to ensure the lavender is in full bloom but not harvested yet. According to their website it is usually in flower in mid-June depending on the weather, however they regularly update their social media with pictures of the field so you can judge whether it is suited to your vision for photographs or not. We visited right at the end of June and it was just perfect I'd say; there was enough room to walk comfortably down the middle of the lavender rows yet they were full enough to look like a wash of purple across the field. They are only open for a few months of the year because as soon as the lavender is harvested then it's gone and the opening times are 10am-5pm.
Onsite there is also a distillery you can look around, a shop and tearooms with a good size outdoor seating area. The shop, toilets and tearooms are on the other side of the road to the lavender field and car park, so if you have children it is best to try and ensure they won't be requesting the toilet when you're at the other side of the field. At the kiosk in the field you can also pick up a small selection of drinks and ice-creams to enjoy while having a look around.
Entry is £4 for adults, £2 for children under 15 years old and free for under 5's, which I'd say is more on the pricey side for how long you'd probably spend in the field. We were only in there for around 30 minutes, partially because Isabella and Poppy's attention span was limited and the main activity is walking around the field. There was a summer quiz for children I saw on the way in, but Isabella is a bit young for it and other than that there didn't seem to be anything else aimed at children. If you're going for the sole purpose to capture beautiful photos then this isn't a problem, however something to consider if you are visiting with children.
Have you visited a lavender field before?

Feel free to leave a comment - I love reading every single one :)

  7. Although you are right, photos in a lavender field is very much a popular bloggers thing, I can see why. Such a pretty colour and you've taken some lovely shots! I've always wondered, how strong the lavender smells when you visit fields?
