I can't believe I'm already writing about the fact that we're having to increase the size of Isabella's bottle. I've written on here before about the fact that we decided to do combined feeding with Isabella (see posts here, here and here). I breastfeed the majority of the time with the addition of two bottles (of either formula or expressed milk) during a 24 hour period.
At the moment Isabella has her bottles at lunch time and just before going to bed, which is working really well but is always open for change as and when she needs it. She had been having 200ml maximum, but now that she's 4 months old she is needing more and more milk. So the 160ml bottles we had been using are now too small, therefore we needed to get some of the larger 260ml-300ml bottles.
I was worried that the larger bottles wouldn't have the features that reduce colic, as they are for older babies.
However I am impressed that the NEW Limited Edition NUK Hello Kitty First Choice+ 300ml Bottle* still has the NUK Anti-Colic Air System. Isabella's never suffered from Colic, which I definitely think has something to do with the bottles we've used (a combination of NUK, Lansinoh and MAM). All of these bottles have anti-colic systems that have helped reduce to the risk of trapped wind upsetting Isabella.
We have also recently changed to size 2 or medium flow teats, I was always worried I wouldn't know when we needed to change but it was obvious. Isabella started to fuss during her feeds and would seem to suck really hard yet take ages to finish the bottle. They were the clues that prompted us to change the teats and she transitioned to the faster flow really easily. I think the fact she's a greedy baby helps! The NUK Hello Kitty Bottle comes with a silicone teat aimed at 6-18 months, so it's a bit too fast for Isabella. We have been using the 0-6 month medium flow First Choice+ teats* with the Hello Kitty Bottle and its been working perfectly. The bottle is the size we need and the teat gives Isabella the flow she needs to feel satisfied and not frustrated!
She's now having 220ml at each feed and I'm demand breastfeeding for the rest of the day. As she doesn't wake up during the night anymore we obviously don't need to feed her then, thank goodness! I'm not sad to miss the 3am Club on Twitter every night, though I know that things can change at any minute so I'm counting my blessing for now.
How much milk does/did your baby have at 4 months?
Feel free to leave me a comment :)

Matilda has six bottles between 5am-6pm. We make up 240ml each time and she drinks anywhere between 100ml and draining the bottle, averaging 1100ml over the course of the day. But, of course, she's a giantess. ;-)
ReplyDeleteIt always impresses me just how quickly Isabella can drink a bottle!!

Tin Box Baby is coming up to four months and has just started having 5oz in her 10.30pm bottle, which I think is about 150ml. It's really difficult to know quite how much to give her but she seems to be happy and is putting on weight nicely. I exclusively breastfed her older sister, so combination feeding is new to me :) #sharewithme
ReplyDeleteIt is a hard one - so much of this parenting job is guess work but like you say, as long as she's putting on weight and is happy that's the most important thing :)
