RECIPE: Mini Completely Edible Flower Pots

While preparing for Isabella's floral themed birthday party I was having a think about how we could integrate that theme into the food. We had a lot of people at our house for her party, so the food needed to reflect this. It couldn't be complicated, yet I still wanted it to have an impact when people walked in. I love creating, cooking and baking...hence making these completely edible flower pots. They were ideal finger food for the party, left no wrapper or cases behind and fitted in perfectly with the floral theme. Once I had the idea in my mind I was determined to somehow create them and in fact ended up doing so with just what we already had in the house. A true store cupboard creation.

What you'll need:
White chocolate, broken into squares
Yellow gel food colouring
Red gel food colouring
(While reading up about how to colour chocolate the advice was to use powder or oil based food colouring, however I didn't have any. I used gel food colouring and it worked perfectly well, but 'normal' food colouring you buy from the supermarkets won't work as the chocolate will seize up due to the water content)
Brownies/chocolate cake, homemade or shop bought
Edible flowers decorations
(You could use wafer flowers (I used these by Dr Oetker), sugar flower decorations that you can buy from supermarkets or fresh edible flowers)
Strawberries or caramel, optional

What to do:
1) Melt the white chocolate either in the microwave (10 seconds at a time) or in a bowl over simmering water.
2) Let the chocolate cool slightly and then a combination of red and yellow gel food colouring. You're aiming to make a sort of terracotta colour. I tried two methods of doing this - by mixing the gel colours together on a piece of clingfilm and gradually added it into the chocolate using a cocktail stick. Or adding the yellow gel colouring to the chocolate first to create a yellow tint. Then very gradually add red gel colouring, mixing really well each time, until you have created an orange/terracotta colour.
3) Once you're happy with the colour spoon it into a silicone mini muffin tray. It has to be silicone, as it makes removing the chocolate flower pots easy. Using a teaspoon spread the chocolate all around each mini muffin section, so that you have completely covered it. Place in the fridge for 5 minutes.
4) Spread another layer of the melted chocolate inside each mini muffin section. This should result in a sturdy flower pot. Return to the fridge for at least 2 hours, or until the chocolate is completely set.
5) Once set peel away the silicone tray and holding only the inside of each flower pot place onto a plate. If you touch the outside it will leave a fingerprint, due to your warmth, which doesn't look very good.
6) Break up the chocolate cake/brownies so that they resemble breadcrumbs. Sprinkle into each flower pot.
7) Arrange your edible flower decorations on top and they're ready to stun your guests! I've also made these with sliced strawberries or a layer of caramel below the crumbled brownies, which makes them even tastier.
