You’re always told you turn in to your mother, and since
becoming a mum, I have definitely noticed I am transforming into mine. From the
phrases I never thought I’d utter, to the array of “mum-essentials” in my
handbag. The things “you would never do as a parent”, that inevitably you end
up doing, to the unending admiration once you realise your mum raised you
without iPads, Peppa Pig on repeat and dedicated children’s tv channels! With
Mother’s Day just around the corner, it got me thinking about all the things
that remind me of my mum, and how we can use those memories to get our mum's really thoughtful Mother’s Day gifts.
Bouquets of flowers
A bouquet of tulips always reminds me of my mum. Perfectly
arranged on the kitchen table, they offered a pop of colour to those winter
days when spring was just around the corner. Even now, when I see tulips, I’m
always transported back to baking in the kitchen on cold, wet days. So, with
that in mind, I started looking at monthly flower subscriptions. Often seen as an extravagance if you buy flowers for
yourself, receiving flowers as a gift – especially favourite ones – is
thoughtful and a little luxurious, and a perfect reminder to your mum how much
you love her.
Picnics in the park
We love nothing more than a picnic, and my childhood
memories are full of picnics on the beach, in the local park and of course in
the grounds of a National Trust property. Full of homemade goodies, from
sandwiches to slightly wonky fairy cakes, Battenburg cakes to
strawberries and cream, there’s something quintessentially British about a
picnic (whatever the weather). To celebrate these memories, this year you could take your mum and family to one of these favourite picnic spots.
A box of chocolates
A box of chocolates
Perhaps an obvious choice for a Mother’s Day gift, but a box of her favourite chocolates is always a winner. It was always a treat when mum
received a box of chocolates and we got to share them with her – I felt
terribly grown-up! So, this year why not make it extra special with
something a bit more personalised and it means you can help her eat them post-Mother’s
Day roast too.
Needlework pictures
When I was younger, my mum was always crafting something,
and with the recent trend in cross-stitching you could give it a go, and create a
personalised piece of cross-stitch for your mum. Cross-stitching is the perfect creative outlet, and
there are so many patterns (with many perfect for complete novices!) to try.
From monogramming with a floral border, to inspirational quotes and everything
in between. There’s a whole host of patterns available, you just have to make
sure you have enough time complete it between now and March 22nd.
I am so lucky I have so many wonderful memories with my mum,
and I hope I’m helping to make memories for my little ones too. Like all gifts,
it’s the thought that counts, and if that’s a homemade card, home-baked
biscuits or hand-picked flowers they should be treasured. I’d love to hear what
you have planned for Mother’s Day.
Feel free to leave a comment - I love reading every single one :)
