DIY: Floral Bunting Cake Topper Tutorial

For Isabella's birthday party I ended up making two cake toppers, a glitter one (see my tutorial here) and this floral bunting one. We had two cakes - one full of sugar and naughtiness for the adults and a no-added sugar version for the babies/children, hence needing two cake toppers. Creating a floral bunting cake topper take no more than 5 minutes, so the perfect option for a last minute addition too. You could easily adapt this to say 'Mr & Mrs' for a wedding, 'boy/girl' for a baby shower or any other number for birthdays.

What you'll need:
2 Paper straws
String
2 Fake flowers
 Alphabet stickers
(I used these from Berrylune)
Scissors
White card
Sellotape

What to do:
1) Cut out enough 'flags' for the number of letters you're having. Make sure each flag is big enough for your alphabet stickers.

2) Cut a length of string long enough to fit all of your flags on and extra to tie around each straw. Tie each end to the straws tightly, you don't want the string to slip down the straw so it must be tight.
3) Stick your alphabet stickers to your card flags and sellotape the flags to the string.
4) The fake flowers I used (they were bought from a charity shop) had a wire stem, which I wrapped around the top of each straw. If yours don't have a wire stem them glue the flowers in place at the top of each straw, so that they cover where you've tied the string.
5) Push each straw into your cake and you're done!
These were the two cake toppers we had at Isabella's birthday party - which style do you prefer?

  1. I love it - so simple but so effective! We had a topper similar to the one on the right for Zach's birthday, but I want to give a bunting topper a go for the next birthday we celebrate xx

  2. This is adorable! I bought one similar to this for my daughter's first on Etsy - but it wasn't nearly as lovely. I've pinned and stumbled this x #TheList
