PHOTOGRAPHY: How to Edit DIY Maternity Silhouette Photos using PS Express

On Monday I published the photos from a mini DIY maternity silhouette photoshoot and today I'm going to be taking you through step-by-step how I edited the photos. It's a really quick and simple process and completely free too! I can upload photos straight from my camera onto my phone/tablet via wifi, which makes life so easy and editing pictures really quick. I prefer to edit on my tablet because it has a bigger screen, but this could be done on either.

Before:
Here's my step-by-step guide on how to edit silhouette photos:

1) Once you have downloaded your chosen photos then you'll need to open up the PS Express app (free to download).
2) Choose a photo to edit and select it. You're screen should look like this:
3) Right at the bottom of the screen select the third icon along (looks like three lines). This is where the photo editing features are. Select Exposure and drag the blue dot along the line until it reaches 30. This will brighten your photo.
4) Next, select Contrast and drag the blue button along the line to 100.
5) Select Highlights and drag the blue dot along to 30.
6) Select Shadows and drag the blue dot down the line to -100.
7) Select Whites and move the dot to 10.
8) Go along to Color and select Temperature. Move the blue dot along to -7.
9) Select Vibrancy and drag the dot along the line to 10.
10) Go along to Effects and select Clarity. Drag the blue dot along the line to 12.
That's it! Once you've done those steps a few times then you'll be able to edit the photos really quickly. You can, of course, play around with the different editing features yourself. I prefer my photos to be cool toned, hence reducing their temperature to -7, but if you like warmer toned photos then increase the temperature. It's fun to play around and find your own editing style.

Before and After:
As you can see there isn't a huge difference between the two photos; I just increased the brightness from the light source and darkened my silhouette to create a greater contrast.

What's your favourite way of editing photos?

Feel free to leave a comment - I love reading every single one :)

  15. What you can do here is to utilize a reflector on the contrary side of the light source. The reflector ricochets the light onto your subject, in this manner making a considerably milder light brightening. photolemur

  19. We, now and then, erroneously, feel that extraordinary workmanship and photography "offers itself." Big error! Extraordinary photography does not offer itself. In the business world, nothing offers itself - nothing! Realizing this is basic to begin a photography business.
