JUNE: Celebrate World Avocado Month with Delicious Recipes and Fun Facts

This June marks the first ever 'World Avocado Month' hosted by the World Avocado Organisation. Over the past five years Avocados have become quite the brunch 'must-have' and sales have soared by 184%, so there's no denying we can't get enough of them! On toast, as a mayonnaise alternative or in guacamole, avocados are a versatile and not to mention delicious addition to anyone's day. An impressive 96.7 million kilos of avocados were consumed in the UK last year, with over 6,000 being sold every hour just here in the UK. Can you believe it? While their popularity continues to soar it only seems right to help celebrate World Avocado Month by sharing a few fun facts and delicious recipes with you.

Did you know...
  • The consumption of avocados in the UK is the second highest in Europe.
  • Avocados are naturally cholesterol-free.
  • They are filled with nutritious good fats.
  • Contain a high amount of protein.
  • Have more potassium than a banana.
  • Contain 27% of the recommended daily amount of fibre.
  • They help to protect your skin.
  • Avocados come from: Australia, Israel, Brazil, Chile, Kenya, Colombia, Morocco, Mexico, Mozambique, New Zealand, Peru, South Africa, Spain, Tanzania, USA and Zimbabwe.
  • Between 2012 - 2016 the value of avocado imports to Britain reached an impressive £181 million.

To help celebrate World Avocado Month the World Avocado Organisation have partnered with various restaurants and companies to bring all the avocado goodness our way! Below are some of the exciting events and offers going on this June:
  • If you head to one of the many Chilangos this month you'll receive a complimentary side of avocado with your meal, as well as an opportunity to win a Vespa.
  • Pick up a Sainsburys Magazine to find delicious and zingy recipes, all made with green Tabasco sauce and fresh avocados. All the inspiration you need to get creative in the kitchen this June.
  • Tesco is hosting a 100 day roadshow in over 100 stores, which will involve serving tasty avocado inspired dishes, including the All-American Avodogs and Avoburgers.
  • In Costco stores there will be opportunities to try avocado and walnut dishes, including a walnut avocado yogurt with honey.

The popularity of avocados always seems to be growing and with an Avobar opening in Covent Garden at the end of July you will now be able to enjoy instagrammable avocado dishes in a complicated dedicated café. So why not get involved this World Avocado Month and eat all the smashed avocado?

Feel free to leave a comment - I love reading every single one :)
