TRAVEL: An Autumn Family Getaway in North Norfolk

TRAVEL: An Autumn Family Getaway in North Norfolk
Autumn is now upon us and I for one am very excited about it. The crisp mornings, stunning sunsets and all those crunchy leaves under foot make it the perfect time of year to escape somewhere new. We recently joined my husband's family for a long weekend in Norfolk, which was just the perfect place to spend quality time together, eat good food and enjoy all of the seaside towns. As someone who live in the Midlands, it is always very exciting and such a novelty being by the seaside. This was our first time visiting the north of Norfolk and we fell in love with the area. There is so much to see, explore and discover for the whole family.

If you're also planning a trip to Norfolk and are looking for somewhere family-friendly to stay then Norfolk Cottages has a wide range of beautiful cottages across the county. Some of my personal favourites are 1 Railway Cottages in Holt, The Barn at Moor Hall in Briston, Two The Crescent in Cromer, Bluebell in Banham and Sloe Gin Cottage in Heacham. They have an impressive range of cottages for all party sizes, which is especially good if you're going away with extended family or friends.
When it comes to holiday planning I absolutely love looking around at what there is to do in the local area, so that no time is wasted while we're away. My top picks for the north of Norfolk are:

If you're looking for somewhere to let the children run of some energy, have a picnic or enjoying browsing the beautiful grounds of a truly stunning house then Sandringham House is the place to visit. It is one of the Queen's residences and has all the grandeur you'd expect and want. There is a large wooden children's play area and vast woodland/open fields to enjoy picnics, which are completely free to go to. You do have to pay to get into the gardens and house, as you'd expect, but I was really impressed with the variety of spaces that are open to the public for free. You also have access to the gift shops, café, toilets and many free car parking spaces.
A place to build sandcastles, visit the arcades, eat all the ice-cream, go on the fairground rides and maybe even go on a boat trip out to sea. There is a lot to see and do in this cute but traditional British seaside town. You get the charm of the small independent delis, alongside endless fish and chip shops, arcades and the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen. Hunstanton is one of the only places on the East coast where the sun sets over the sea and it truly does make for a beautiful scene. We took many sunset strolls along the beach (child-free might I add!), which was the perfect way to end busy days exploring the area. There are also plenty of golfing options, from pitch and putt to crazy golf and adventure golf. A very well equipped park for the children is on the seafront and we were impressed and how quiet the whole place seemed to be. We visited on the last weekend of the summer holidays this year and it wasn't those scenes of everywhere swarming I usually imagine when it comes to hot weekends in the UK.

Another beautiful old house to visit with the grounds filled with things to see and do. There is a large wooden children's play area you can access by only paying for parking (£3 in 2018), however it is worth noting that the toilets are a bit of a walk away. But there is a cute little coffee van serving a variety of hot drinks for parents to enjoy while their children are exploring the play area. Inside the Hall grounds there is a Field to Fork interactive experience, walled gardens, courtyard café, gift shop, cycle hire, mini cinema, kitchen garden and the Marble Hall. A vast array of activities to keep the whole family entertained.

Kite Flying on the Coast
The East coast can get very windy, so it is the perfect place to take a kite and get flying. We picked up some kites that were only £1 each and headed down to the seafront to get maximum wind. The children loved having a go at flying a kite, but to be honest it was the adults that got the most competitive! Who's could go the highest? Who could make theirs the quickest? A guaranteed laugh with the whole family.

An alternative and fun place to enjoy a delicious meal is Shuck's Yurt, which is in Thornham, just outside Hunstanton and along the coast from Wells-Next-The-Sea. You can enjoy a variety of rustic dishes inside the yurt, including curries, roast dinners and a comprehensive children's menu. There is also a play area and picnic benches outside, as well as a variety of things to keep children entertained at the tables. Its relaxed environment and friendly service makes for a unique dining experience perfect for families.

You can watch more of our Norfolk adventures over on our Weekend Vlog #7, which is on my IGTV channel.

  3. What an amazing sounding time to be had in North Norfolk. I have to admit I don't think I have ever been to Norfolk myself. I'll have to perhaps change that and think about taking an autumn break over here.

  10. I’ll admit I am so ready for the cooler weather. I stayed in the Norfolk coast as part of a school trip and it really is the most beautiful coast line. We haven’t been on a family holiday yet but I will be looking into the norkfork cottages now you’ve mentioned them, kite flying sounds so much fun.
