HOW TO: Have a more Sustainable Valentine's Day (+ Exclusive Discount Code for Nordgreen)

Valentine's Day is quickly approaching, so why not make celebrating it more sustainable this year? A lot of us are trying to make small changes towards living a more sustainable and eco-friendly way of life, which is so important for our planet and can be relatively easy to do too. Many of the Valentine's Day gifts, decorations or accessories are plastic based and not aimed for more than one use, so below there are a few ideas of how to swap those for alternatives that are more sustainable and reusable. I absolutely love any excuse to celebrate, make someone else feel special and spread joy, especially after the past two years. I think that we are all in need of little pick-me-ups and Valentine's Day can be the perfect time for that, whether it be celebrating with your husband, wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, best friend or your children. Let's kick start 2022 by spreading lots of love and kindness!
Gifting
When it comes to gift shopping for Valentine's Day in a more sustainable way it is important to know which companies have sustainability at the core of driving their business forward. Nordgreen is one of those brands who create beautifully designed timeless watches, as well as continuously striving for better sustainability practices throughout every aspect of their business. You can use the code 'TEM' for 15% off your order and their watches make the most perfect thoughtful Valentine's Day gift. They have watches for both men and women, all of which are timeless, classic and stylish. Each one is crafted with such attention to detail and the fact that there are so many different interchangeable strap options means that you can create many different looks from one single watch face.
Nordgreen offset their carbon emissions through the Burgos Wind Project in the Philippines, which is a UN certified project focusing on not only producing clean energy, but also leading projects and initiatives with the local government/communities that promote the protection of the environment. In January 2021 they also partnered with CleanHub in order to calculate offset of their plastic use for every watch sold, as well as plastic offset for all full time employees. Another sustainability initiative is that at their Head Office they only use electricity from renewable energy sources, are working towards having zero waste in their work spaces and the paper they use is recycled.
Alongside all of these Nordgreen also focus a lot on their Giving Back Programme , so when you purchase a Nordgreen watch you have a choice between three incredible causes to donate to, which doesn't cost you any more, all you have to do is enter a few details about your watch into their website and choose the cause closest to your heart. These donations are Water for Good who will provide two months of clean water to one person in The Central African Republic or Pratham UK who will give one month of education to a child in India or last but certainly not least Cool Earth who will preserve 200 sqft of rain forest in Latin America.
This is their Philosopher Watch with a 40mm White Dial and 3-Link Strap in Silver (£189 or £160.65 using my exclusive discount code 'TEM' for 15% off), which is timeless, classic and perfect for all occasions. The interchangeable straps mean that you can create a completely different look using the original clock face and you only then need to purchase the strap/s you love, which is also better for the environment.

Wrapping
Instead of using glittery foil lined wrapping paper, which isn't recyclable consider changing to either recycled and recyclable kraft paper or even better still wrapping your gift in reusable fabric. There are many tutorials online on how to use a piece of fabric to wrap your gifts, including this one from Isabella Mai-de using one of their Personalised Flour Sack Tea Towels. Below I've used the Personalised Jar of Hearts Muslin Cloth from Isabella Mai-de, which is perfect if you have a baby and want to wrap up a Valentine's Day present. The advantage of using fabric is that it is reusable and also makes an extra special addition to the gift giving experience. If you use kraft wrapping paper then it can also be made extra special by printing or drawing on your own unique design/personalisation and try to use paper tape or plastic-free sellotape to ensure it can be easily recycled.
Decorations
Instead of choosing plastic based, single use Valentine's Day decorations go for paper/cardboard based ones that can be recycled or even better used year after year. Wooden decorations are not only beautiful, but can be used for many years to come without being damaged/creased etc. Avoiding napkins with foil coating is another easy way to ensure Valentine's Day is more eco-friendly this year.
What are your Valentine's Day plans this year?

Feel free to leave a comment - I love reading every single one :)

  3. I love making handmade gifts, even down to the wrapping. Like you mentioned, so many cannot be recycled. But we can reuse for sure!
