I MADE: Vintage Inspired Photo Holder for less than £2!

I really enjoy doing crafty projects, especially when it involves making something that is otherwise old, broken or useless into something beautiful. In the first 'I MADE' post I created a pesonalised photo frame for my pregnant sister-in-law (see post here) and so on to my second post.

I'm a massive fan of TK Maxx, if you have the time to search there are often gems to be found! During their yellow sticker sale last year (they have this sale twice a year, one in the summer and one at Christmas, where a lot of their stock is severly reduced) I bought a couple of photo frames without any glass in for £1 each. I know, no glass, what's the point?! But I knew (and hoped) that I would have some creative inspiration to make something with them! Ok, inspiration was slow as it's now about 6 months later but it came to me....I'll make a photo holder within the photo frame.

This creation took be LESS than 5 minutes to create, so really is a quick craft project!

Firstly, I took the back off the photoframe and cut a piece of 'rustic' string so that it was just a bit longer than the width of the photo frame back. I lay the string quite near to the top of the back board (about 3cm) and held it taut, then stuck both sides down on the back of the board with duck tape (or strong sellotape). It doesn't matter if the back looks messy, who see's it?

Secondly, I got one of the postcards I wanted to display in my photo holder to measure where the second piece of string needed to go. Once you have measured it (very roughly, you can change it easily by unpicking the sellotape) do the same thing with the second piece of string, as with the first.

Thirdly, repeat step number two again with the third piece of string. You can have as little or as many piece of string, it depends on the size of the photo's you want to display and the finished look your after.

Once you have all the string in place and are happy with it, carefully put the board back into the photo frame and push down the little metal levers that keep the back board in place. This can be a bit fiddley because the string that is wrapped around the edges make the board ever so slightly wider, but it should fit in again, mine did.

Then you can attach the photo's/postcards/pictures you want to display. I used coloured paperclips to attach the postcards to the piece of string. This adds some colour to the brown background but you could also use wooden pegs and paint them or stamp on words that relate to the picture on a wooden peg using ink stamps (see the set I have in a previous post here).

You can leave the photo holder as it is or you can add further decoration. I bought this pack of flowers that have a metal tie to them from a carboot sale for 50p. I decided to weave the metal tie around the top piece of string for a vintage inspired look.

Postcards were free in the Period Living Magazine last year.

Done! The photo frame was £1, the flowers were 50p and the string I actually got free from my boyfriends parents but 3 piece of string wouldn't cost anymore than 30p. So this whole photo holder only cost me £1.50! Such a bargain with a personal touch and something no one else will have :)

Do you like it?

Are you going to have a go at making this?
