PARENTHOOD: Travelling with the Ergobaby Metro Compact City Stroller

PARENTHOOD: Travelling with the Ergobaby Metro Compact City Stroller

The challenge so many of us parents face is getting around with our children in tow, especially if they are too young to walk longer distances. Pushchairs can be bulky and therefore not ideal for city use or for travelling. However Ergobaby, who are well known for their incredibly practical yet stylish baby carriers, have recently launched their first Compact City Stroller called Metro. It combines sleek design with ergonomic comfort for babies and the compact lightweight size so many parents look for. The Metro currently comes in three colours: Black, Grey and Blue; there is also a Newborn Kit available and a Carry Bag for the ultimate convenience.
On our recent trip to Copenhagen we took the Ergobaby Metro in Grey (£299.90) with us; would it be the travel companion we needed when travelling with two young children? Upon receiving the Stroller the first feature I noticed was quite simply how compact it is. We're talking impressively compact, lightweight and therefore easy to store, move around and take with us to the airport. It only weighs 6.3kg and the folded dimensions are h52 x w44 x d23cm; the ideal solution for anyone with limited space at home, in their car or planning to travel around with small children in tow.
As the Metro Stroller comes it is suitable from 6 months up to 18kg, however there is a Newborn Kit (£129.90) available separately transforming the Stroller into one suitable from birth. It's hard to believe that such a super-compact design could be suitable from birth, so credit to the Ergobaby designers for making travel and city life accessible to all parents. Another stand-out feature of this Stroller is that it is the only stroller on the market that has been certified 'back-friendly' by the experts at AGR (Campaign for Healthier Backs). They do this by having a soft padded seat with advanced multi-zone support and an adjustable leg rest to give your baby a superior level of comfort. This supportive seat is paired with smooth riding suspension and large back wheels, so that it can easily handle pavement cracks, cobbles and kerbs for a comfortable ride.
This Stroller has a multi-position seat, enabling you to recline your child down to laying and back up to sitting depending on what is required. The UPF50 Sunhood also helps to provide protection from the weather and create a calm environment for if your baby wants to sleep in the Stroller. A feature I really liked that you don't often see in compact strollers if that peep hole in the sunhood, enabling you to see your child without constantly having to peer round the hood. Also, once the seat is fully reclined there is a cool air mesh allowing airflow during hotter weather or the option to cover the mesh up during cooler weather. It's impressive to have so many options from such a small stroller; something I would have previously considered to be reserved for more perhaps more complex travel systems.

When we went on holiday to Copenhagen we took the Ergobaby Metro with us and it made travelling with two young children so much easier! The Metro Stroller Carry Bag is a backpack style bag that the Metro can go in and then be carried 'hands-free', which was a saviour in the airport. We checked the Ergobaby Metro into the hold (as a free piece of baby equipment with Ryan Air flights), which was ideal because it was all contained within the Carry Bag so there were no worry that a part could get broken throughout the airport process. We also found that keeping the Carry Bag in the storage basket when we were out and about in Copenhagen meant that we were completely adaptable to the situations we faced. If we needed to close it up when eating in a restaurant, or going on a bus or the metro train then we were able to not only do that but also carry it on our backs for convenience.
Copenhagen is filled with cobbled streets, which can be a challenge for lightweight strollers but not for the Ergobaby Metro. It provided Poppy with a smooth ride, so much so that she often fell asleep in it during our days out. It is really easy to manoeuvre with one hand and the fact it is narrow makes it convenient for steering around shops, crowds and through the streets of a city. We were so incredibly impressed with the Ergobaby Metro - the fact it is quite so compact, lightweight and stylish is a winning combination for us parents and babies/toddlers alike.
What do you look for in a lightweight pushchair?

  2. My boys are too old for strollers now, but this looks like a nice piece of kit. We had a foldable McLaren umbrella stroller, but this one looks a wee bit more comfy.

  3. Having the multi-position seat capability sounds perfect to ensuring comfort and the fact that it copes with cobblestones is a major bonus.

  16. When my son was still a baby, what I’m looking for in a stroller was easy to bring along, comfy for the baby and sturdy and safe. Ergobaby sounds really awesome.
