HOME: Creating a Green & Rose Pink Reception Room

Creating a Family-Friendly Green & Rose Pink Reception Room

Since lockdown began back in March a lot of us have spent so much time at home that we've noticed areas that would be lovely to decorate, places that could do with a better method of organisation and a feel of wanting to make our safe spaces cosier, clever and beautiful too. Home renovations don't need to be big projects or really expensive either; with some smart shopping around, clever bigger pieces and a calming colour palette you can totally transform a room within a couple of weeks. Like many, we decided to change up a few rooms in our home, do a spot of interior shopping and increase the amount of storage we have around the house. As parents to three young children we have a seemingly endless supply of 'things' that need storing, whether that be toys, clothes, books, activities or blankets etc. A lot of our previous storage was visible, in the sense that it was baskets or boxes without lids, so you could still see the items. This was something I really wanted to change going forward for a few reasons; they made areas look cluttered, our youngest child was able to constantly empty them out and everything was poorly organised. It was always inevitable that the one toy our children wanted to play with was going to be right at the bottom of the box or basket!
The front reception room in our house was one that had been neglected since we moved in over five years ago. It is a bit of an awkward space with a radiator taking up one whole wall, three doors off it and our front door going into the room. It has a sort of 'corridor' feel, which wasn't very warm or welcoming, but luckily it didn't really need painting or major decorating. We decided to go for a green, rose pink and gold colour palette to compliment the already sage green feature chimney breast. It's such a calming colour combination, is warming and relatively easy to source decorative items too. As for materials we opted for soft velvet and warm wood with the contrast of the industrial metal.
It all started with the Haru Small Sofa Bed in Pine Green Velvet from MADE; they have a really helpful virtual system that allows you to see their furniture in your room via your phone or tablet. You can also order fabric samples, which again makes choosing the right colour really easy. The deep green shade was then the focus throughout our other purchases, including the Julius Velvet Eyelet Lined Pair of Curtains in Forest Green (a pretty perfect match for the Pine Green Sofa).
To contrast with the deep green curtains we went for dusky rose pink velvet pieces. Rose pink works well with the green and we wanted to choose items that were also velvet, so that they complimented each other. We went for the Kendall Chair Rose Velvet from Dunelm as a desk chair and Kirkton House Pink Velvet Ottoman from Aldi. The Ottoman was such a steal, as it is a similar style to one sold by MADE that is £200, whereas Aldi's version was only £79.99. It is sold out now, but may be worth keeping an eye out for a second hand one. But any ottoman that has storage inside is such a perfect way to get that much needed extra storage space, as well as offering seating and looking luxurious.
When it came to increasing our storage capacity we looked really hard for the right cabinet for the room. We already had a couple of different types of wood around the room, so were cautious of adding another type with a classic sideboard or bookcase. The space we had allocated for the storage unit was also relatively narrow and high, but has a light switch we couldn't cover over. This made it quite awkward, as we really needed to maximise the storage capacity, yet a lot of the sideboards and bookcases were either too wide or too high. Then we came across Mustard Made, which is a brand with beautiful aesthetic and stylish storage lockers. It was started by sisters Becca and Jess when their love for lockers became the best idea for a hot new brand! Mustard Made is the home to an array of different size and shape lockers to suit all your storage needs, as well as having many clever features to make our lives easier. The Skinny is for tall, small spaces, The Shorty makes for the perfect bedside table, The Lowdown is for wider spaces and The Midi is for slightly narrower taller spaces. They are all available in a range of colours, including the new sage green (seen here), blush, berry, ocean, mustard, navy, slate, white and olive. The colours are chosen to compliment each other in groups or contrast each other to create a real impact.
We ordered samples of the blush pink and sage green to see which would compliment the room best, which is a really helpful feature Mustard Made offer. Although the blush pink was beautiful and would be perfect for our daughter's bedroom, we felt that the sage green was such a good match to the wall colour that we went for that one in the end. It's such a subtle, calming colour yet the metal material adds that edge to make it modern. I just love everything that Mustard Made do and now plan to fill our home with their various lockers!
The main VEJMON round coffee table in the middle of the room was actually a lucky free item that someone in our local area was wanting to get rid of, but is still sold at IKEA. I dream of having a coffee table topped with pretty coasters, stylish books and endless candles, but children make that impossible. Instead we opted for a gold mirrored tray, scented candle and mini faux succulent all from B&M and a decorative pine cone as a nod to the autumnal season. The tray is just small enough to mean that Rory can't reach it in the middle of the table, which is perfect for us.
We've now had this room 'refreshed' for a couple of months and it is working so well for our family. A lot of the children's books and crafts are easy accessible in the Mustard Made The Midi, the sofa bed has been tested out once and it is very comfortable, as well as having a slightly more grown up, calming area of our home to enjoy together.
Have you refreshed or decorated any parts of your home since lockdown began?

Feel free to leave a comment - I love reading every single one :)

  12. Love all the little touches you have thought through, we also have the same issue with storage on show. It looks so much better in a cabinet. I need to do this. Also really like the Aldi chair, I actually looked at it when they had it in stock but at the moment have no where to put it. Nevermind one day hopefully
