PLAYROOM: Creating a sensory tent at home

As part of Isabella's playroom I really wanted to create a sensory tent, as she loves anything that lights up or shines.

I used to work at a nursery during the summer holidays at university and they had a sensory room filled with UV lights, shiny things, glow in the dark stars etc. The children used to love visiting it, but when it came to finding a sensory room I could take Isabella to it was hard to find one. That's when I thought about creating my own, something I could put up and take down easily. After doing some research I stumbled across the Glow Crazy Doodle Dome on amazon, at only £12.49 it was a bargain! I was initially looking at pop up camping tents, as it needed to be something that would block out most of the light, but they were too big for in our playroom.

The Glow Crazy Doodle Dome is a smallish pop up tent, so it takes seconds to put up - perfect for parents who don't have much time. Another feature of the dome is that it comes with a battery powered pen that lets you 'draw' on one of the walls inside the tent. The writing glows and then disappears, so it's reusable as many times as you like. This feature isn't suitable for Isabella yet, but fun for older children.

I filled the dome with an emergency/space blanket (this is one of Isabella's favourite things), a fibre optic light, battery powered fairy lights and a colour changing light. But you could fill it with anything that glows, lights up or is sensory in anyway. I safety pinned the fairy lights to the roof of the tent, so that when she lay down in it she had something interesting to look at above. Some of my friends have recreated this sensory tent and also included hanging black and white pictures from the ceiling of the tent.

Isabella absolutely LOVES spending time in the glow tent, I just wish I could fit in as it's so relaxing! Also, always make sure you supervise your child inside a sensory tent.

  6. This is a great idea. We've got the same tent - my son's a bit older, and of course he lost the pen straight away, so I really should get a new replacement one. The tents are brilliant - ours does now have a couple of holes in it - doesn't help when he and his 6 year old cousin both want to lie in it!

  9. If the tent is not stored in a location away from heat sources, the tent material cold become brittle reducing the life of the tent. sun canopy
