WEANING: Paprika Baked Beans Recipe

Baked beans are such a versatile meal option for adults, but their high levels of sugar and salt don't make them very baby friendly. After making this version, that has no sugar or salt in, you really realise quite how much sugar baked beans usually have! A baked potato or sweet potato is one of Isabella's favourite lunches, so I was thinking of different toppings she could have. These paprika baked beans take a little bit of time but almost no effort and are made from store cupboard ingredients. I try to keep the ingredients in at all times, so I can quickly make a batch when needed.
What you'll need:

1 can/pouch Cannelloni or haricot beans, drained

2 tbsp Tomato puree

1 jar Sieved tomatoes or passata

1/2-1 tsp Paprika, either smoked or original

What to do:

1) Over a medium heat put the tomato puree and paprika in a saucepan. Cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.

2) Add the sieved tomatoes, stir and simmer for 15 minutes.

3) Mix in the beans and simmer for a further 10-15 minutes or until the tomatoes have reduced as much as you want and the bitterness of the tomatoes has cooked out.

4) Serve with baked potato/sweet potato, slices of toast, mashed potato etc. I slightly mashed them for Isabella, but you know what texture your child can handle.

What would your little one enjoy these baked beans with?

  2. This is a good idea. I tend to avoid baked beans for the girls because of the salt, but never considered making them myself. May try it. #thelist
