REVIEW: Red Letter Days Voucher - Thornton Hall Hotel and Spa

A while ago some of our friends kindly gave us a Red Letter Days voucher for a Two Night Hotel Escape for Two (£189), which we made the most of just before Isabella arrived last year. Back in March we took a weekend off renovating our house and enjoyed our last weekend away before having a baby. Now I know just how valuable this was because staying in a hotel with Isabella would be very challenging now. Oh how I miss hotel breakfasts!

When I started looking into using the voucher I hadn't realised you can actually change the experience your voucher is for, either for the same monetary value or you can pay more to upgrade. This is such a great feature of the Red Letter Days website, as sometimes you may receive/give a voucher that doesn't exactly suit the recipient. This option allows them to choose something they love, ensuring your money doesn't get wasted. We didn't want to change the experience, as a long weekend away was perfect for us.

I'd highly recommend looking at the hotel websites directly, as there is quite a range of different types of accommodation available within the Two Night Hotel Escape for Two voucher. These include small B&B's, boutique hotels, spa hotels and hotels that are part of a chain. The standard of the hotels does seem to vary hugely too, with some being a lot more 'luxurious' than others. So it's well worth doing some research and referring to Tripadvisor or blog reviews too.

We settled on Thornton Hall Hotel and Spa in the Wirral, an area of the United Kingdom we hadn't visited before. Another massive selling point was that the hotel was only 20 minutes away from both Chester and Liverpool. We love Chester and have been there a number of times, as well as the large outlet shopping centre around there. But I had never been to Liverpool, so was really looking forward to discovering a new city!
The hotel has a range of different standard room, from clubrooms to a penthouse suite - the voucher includes two nights in a clubroom but it does say that there may be a chance to upgrade upon arrival at the hotel. All of the rooms include free Wi-Fi and Smart TV's. We were actually upgraded twice due to the location of our original upgraded room. There was a wedding happening in the hotel and our room was right next door, which was a bit noisy but not a big enough problem for us to complain. However a very helpful member of staff rang from reception offering to move and upgrade us again due to the noise levels. We were also offered a drink of our choice to be bought up to the room as a kind gesture for the inconvenience. I have to say the customer service was outstanding throughout our stay.

Food and Drink options at the Thornton Hall Hotel and Spa are vast and include: The Lawns Restaurant, Times Brassiere and Lawns Lounge and Bar. The Lawns Restaurant has been award 3 AA Rosettes and offers afternoon tea, lunch time dining, a Sunday menu, evening menu and tasting menu. Eating at The Lawns Restaurant isn't a cheap option, with starters costing around £12, main courses around £24 and desserts around £9. It's certainly a fine dining experience, perfect as a treat or special occasion. Afternoon tea costs £19.95 per person, again a lovely treat.

Breakfast was absolutely delicious with ample fruit, pastries, cereals, teas, cooked breakfast and meats. Our first night was a weekend so it was a buffet, however the second morning was a weekday and you had to order the cooked breakfast. We prefered the buffet style but understand that it's quieter during the week.
The spa is a big reason as to why we decided to book this hotel, the spa facilities are ample and as someone who was heavily pregnant I was always looking for ways to pamper/treat myself before I didn't have any time to! The spa facilities include: pool, outdoor hydro spa pool, thermal zone, rasul, tranquillity suite, holistic treatments, bootcamp, hair spa and make up studio. Obviously being pregnant meant that I was not able to make the most of all of these facilities, but my husband enjoyed them. The list of treatments available is vast and varied. See a full list of treatments and prices here, there is a really good range for pregnant women!

We really enjoyed our stay at the Thornton Hall Hotel and the experience of booking a stay using a Red Letter Days voucher. They make the perfect gift and the choice of experiences, adventures and nights away.

Have you ever used a Red Letter Days voucher - if so what did you do?

Feel free to leave me a comment :)
