TODDLER CRAFT: Play Food for Pennies

Play food can be expensive, but is often enjoyed for many hours by toddlers and children alike. If you're looking at buying some play food then why not try this quick DIY craft activity first? Your children can get involved in making them and they are ready to play with within a few hours. Salt dough is widely used over the festive period for Christmas decorations or capturing little ones hand/footprints. However, salt dough is a brilliantly cheap way of making items for children to play with too. A bag of plain flour is around 40p and table salt is only 29p (prices from ASDA), therefore you can make salt dough play food for pennies!
What you'll need:
1 cup Table salt
2 cups Plain flour
1 cup Water

What to do:
1) Preheat the oven to 180'C. Add the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl and stir well.
2) Gradually pour in the water, mixing each time, until the dough combines.
3) Tip the dough onto a clean surface and knead for 30 second, to gather it together.
4) Break into golf ball size pieces and mould into various food items. I was creating a bakery, so made rolls, baguettes, bagels etc.
5) Place on a lined baking tray and cook for 30 minutes. They should be hard and slightly golden, giving them a realistic look.
6) Transfer onto a wire rack to cool. Once completely cool they should be rock hard and ready to play with.
Which play foods would your little one enjoy playing with?

Feel free to leave a comment - I love reading every single one :)

  7. This is a great idea and use for salt dough!
I recently tried a salt dough recipe I found on Pinterest to capture my Baby Boy's foot print and hand print for his first Christmas. He was 8 weeks old at the time. I baked it and everything, but baking it just made it bubble up and then when it cooled, the top layer just peeled right off, and now that it's been sitting out, it has gone back to being soft! Such a major let down.
I may try your recipe and see if does better for me. It was such a huge bummer, I'm kind of hesitant to even try it again though.
Thanks for sharing, I'll let you know if I try your recipe.
