GLAMPING: Escape to the Herefordshire Countryside to an eco-cabin called The Carn

GLAMPING: Escape to the Herefordshire Countryside to an eco-cabin called The Carn

Down a steep, bumpy track you'll discover The Carn, an eco-cabin nestled in the Herefordshire hills, right on the border with Wales. Be prepared to escape every day life, internet, television and get back to nature with a touch of luxury that makes staying at The Carn so magical. Glamping is such a unique experience and something that I fell in love with prior to having children. Now that we are a family of five it can be very challenging to find a glamping experience that can accommodate five people, as well as being child-friendly. But The Carn has brought to life all our glamping hopes with it's five beds, ample space for the children (or dog) to explore, a fire pit for s'mores, a flushing toilet inside the cabin, a chest full of games and an outdoor bath for yet another magical unique experience. As you open the large glass door you're surrounded by plants, earthy hexagonal terracotta floor tiles and a decision of which side of the cabin to explore first.
On your left there are two bedrooms (one sleeping two in a double bed with space for a cot and one sleeping three in a double bed and single bunk bed) and a bathroom complete with spacious shower, roll top bath and flushing toilet. Sustainability and being environmentally friendly is a focus throughout, so in the bathroom you'll find eco-friendly toiletries and toilet roll. There is also underfloor heating throughout that section of the cabin, which is so cosy on the cooler winter/early spring mornings.
As you walk back towards the entrance you come into the main living space and straight away you are drawn to the breathtaking views of the rolling Herefordshire hills. But coming back into the converted Shepherd's Cabin there is a well equipped kitchen filled with pots, pans, foil, eco-friendly cleaning products, whistle kettle, gas oven and grill, plates, baking trays, spices, oil, vinegar, cutlery, a small fridge/freezer and matches. There are also some beautiful welcome goodies, including delicious local sourdough bread, ground coffee from Worcester and refreshing apple juice. It's those little touches that make a stay at The Carn feel truly luxurious. In the open plan living space there is also a dining table (with a booster seat strapped to one chair if needed), cosy wood burner, a chest full of games, books and ample seating area facing out towards the views.
The large patio doors (that fully open up if you visit in the warmer months, enabling complete free-flowing between the indoor and outdoor spaces) lead out onto decking which is where the magic truly comes alive. On one side there is a sunken bath tub surrounded by lanterns for the most peaceful outdoor bathing (an experience not to be missed - there's something about being able to be in a hot bath, outdoors, with the moon shining down on you and the flicker of candles that is very special) or an outdoor shower if you're feeling brave! As well as the most serene wicker hanging egg chair for reading in or simply watching the world go by.
Straight ahead there are a couple of steps down to a fire pit area complete with four outdoor wooden leaning chairs and a fire pit that is calling for s'mores to be made on it every night. Spending time together as a family with the sun setting to the side of us, while toasting marshmallows and embracing the outdoors was incredible. Imagine on a summer's evening sitting outside chatting for hours while the fire flickers in the middle of you...heavenly.
Back onto the decking and on the other side to the bath is an outdoor kitchen area, which has enamel tableware, a raised seating area, sink, lanterns and pans that can be used on the fire pit. There is also a swing, which the children loved and did not want to leave behind.
A short walk through fields and you're in Presteigne where you can enjoy their deli, cafes and restaurants. It is worth noting that a lot of places seemed to be shut Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, so bear that in mind when booking a stay. We took the walk to Presteigne and despite the steep hill at the end the girl's managed to walk to whole way there and back (of course, the draw of s'mores on the fire pit was a big incentive). Other than that we didn't leave The Carn once during our two night stay because you really don't need to. Ensure you take enough food for your stay and there is no need to venture out. Why would you want to leave when you're surrounded by such a unique experience right where you are?

Our Family Photo Album...
If you're visiting during the wetter months/seasons, then I'd recommend taking wellies because The Carn is set in a large field and the children all loved exploring during the day. I'd also recommend not taking too much food that requires the fridge, as it is only small (a good size for two nights, but if you were staying for longer you may need to do a couple of trips to the shops) and take smaller milk cartons as we took two four pint cartons and they didn't fit in very easily. The eco-cabin is off grid, so a limited fridge space is to be expected and part of the magic of the experience, but worth planning ahead for. Although there is no Wi-Fi or a television we both did have very good 4G, which was reassuring that we were contactable in case there was an emergency.
If you are looking for a true escape away from every day life then The Carn is for you, but it would also be such a special place to visit for birthdays, engagements, babymoon, honeymoon etc. Find The Carn on Canopy & Stars and if you have any questions feel free to ask away or email the owners Becks and Bill who are extremely helpful, friendly and talented, as they created The Carn!

Feel free to leave a comment - I love reading every single one :)

  2. This looks like a great camping spot. My mum lives in Ross-on-Wye, and it doesn't look too far away from her.
